Onychomycosis

Fungal infection of the nails (both on the hands and feet) is caused by a germ that invades the nail bed. Onychomycosis causes the nails to become very thick, hard, discolored, deformed and broken much more easily.
What causes onychomycosis
Nail fungus is caused by three main categories of organisms:
-Fungi that infect the hair, skin and nails and which feed on the nail tissue (dermatophytes)
-Candidiasis of the nails
-Non-dermatophyte mold bacteria.
Treatment of onychomycosis
The degree of fungal infection in the nail is crucial for the treatment that the doctor will suggest, as well as for whether it will be done locally or systemically.
If onychomycosis is diagnosed at an early stage, treatment can be done topically, with antifungal ointments or in combination with a laser.
If more severe onychomycosis is found, additional oral antifungal pills may be given.
