Seborrheic dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition which causes whitish plaques on oily areas such as the scalp hair or inside the ear.
It can manifest with or without skin redness.
Cradle cap is the term used when Seborrheic dermatitis affects the scalp of babies.
Seborrheic dermatitis in babies, also called Cradle cap, is a harmless temporary condition. It manifests as thick, hard, yellow or brown scales on the child’s scalp. Similar scales can be found on the eyelids, ears, around the nose and in the pelvic area. Cradle cap is observed on newborns and small children until the age of 3.
In adults it manifests as red scaly patches on the scalp, behind the ears, on the eyebrows, nasolabial and chest.
Seborrheic dermatitis is not contagious neither is it caused by poor hygiene. It is no allergy and is not dangerous . It can be itchy or otherwise. If it is , extensive scratching may cause additional inflammation while the tears of the skin can lead to mild infections or bleeding.
The lesions subside on their own within few weeks up to 3 months. If they persist your dermatologist will recommend special shampoos and creams.
