Project Description

Lichen sclerosus

What is Lichen Sclerosus?2018-12-06T11:33:22+02:00

It is a chronic skin condition that affects mainly the genitals and the perianal areas.

Rarely Lichen Sclerosus manifests on the upper part of the body, the chest and arms.

Who is at higher risk?2018-12-06T11:32:20+02:00

Usually it affects postmenopausal women and only rarely men and children.

What are the symptoms?2018-12-06T11:31:25+02:00

It manifests in small, white , shiny patches that come together to form greater plaques. Skin within the plaques becomes thinner and atrophic and can easily be teared.

There can also be itching, bleeding, blisters so the person experiences discomfort or pain, difficulty in urination and pain during sexual intercourse.

The skin often develops scars. If the condition is mild it can be asymptomatic.

What causes Lichen Sclerosus?2018-12-06T11:30:05+02:00

We don’t know exactly what causes it. Immune system disturbances and hormonal problems may be the cause. It is also believed that people inherit the likelihood of the disease.

It appears sometimes on damaged or injured skin. Skin infections such as HPV, herpes etc. may also cause it.

Lichen Sclerosus is related to other autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma, lichen planus, vitiligo and alopecia areata. Lichen Sclerosus is not contagious but the affected skin is more likely to develop skin cancer.

How is it treated?2018-12-06T11:28:58+02:00

Lesions on the trunk or hands usually need no treatment.

If the disease affected the genitals then in circumcision is performed which leads to instant relief but also healing.

Surgery is usually the best choice for children with phimosis.

Surgery is not the best choice for women because of mutilation of the genitals and the frequent relapses after the surgery.

Treatment includes the use of very strong steroid cream or balm on the skin, photodynamic therapy, UVB therapy, estrogen or testosterone creams and retinoids.

Acne

MESOPEN

Mesopen is an alternative form of mesotherapy. It helps the penetration of active substances, creating portals of entry into the skin barrier with the creation of controlled micronulls, thanks to its specially designed head (pen with 12 tiny titanium pins), without obvious skin injury. Through this mechanism of action, the penetration capacity of the active substances increases.
