Bullous pemphigoid
It is a disease that occurs mainly in elderly people and is characterized by the presence of large tense papules on the surface of an erythematous rash but also on healthy skin. Precipitating factors are UVB or UVA ultraviolet radiation as well as medication
It coexists with other autoimmune diseases and is also associated in 10-15% with malignancy (mainly cancer of the stomach, lungs, pancreas, uterus, lymphoma or malignant melanoma).
In several cases it may be preceded by moderate or even excruciating itching a few months before. Unlike pemphigus there is a tendency for the disease to subside after a few months.Clinical examination by the dermatologist establishes the diagnosis together with histological examination and direct and indirect immunofluorescence.
This is a relatively benign disease that often responds to topical corticosteroids. In generalized disease, hospitalization and high doses of steroids are required.
